Dumb Duck Droppings

Let me begin by saying that I've never seen Duck Dynasty. Not once. Being a senior liberal, I guess I'm the in wrong demographic. In fact, I never even heard of Duck Dynasty until Phil Robertson, also known as the Duck Commander, opened up a mouth to GQ contributor, Drew Magary. So the following view is based purely on speculation and not first-hand evidence. Nonetheless, it's altogether too tempting to take a stab at what's behind the current kerfuffle.

As is well known by now, A&E, the network which carries the show, suspended Robertson indefinitely for airing his less-than-glorifying views of gays and African Americans. Shame on A&E. Surely, when a network puts together a reality show featuring Louisiana back-woods types—with or without business savvy—some back-woods views are bound come to light sooner rather than later. The time to have considered how the characters/actors in this reality series might air their views in public is when they were hired and the show was put together...not once it's become a media sensation.

No doubt, A&E has painted itself into a corner. Suspending Robertson is having serious repercussions, and will continue to do so whether A&E rescinds his suspension or not.

And here I thought it was only the news media that have gone brain dead.
