The more things change, the more they remain the same.

Pictures of the protests taking place in Iran today bring memories of the last time Iran was in this kind of turmoil. In 1979, women were also prominent during the demonstrations leading up to the overthrow of the Shah. Then instead of jeans and scarves, the women were out in full force in black garb and veils. I remember thinking at the time, "I wonder how long it'll take for these women to discover that they can't take the costume off." I guess we know now.

It seems that Iranian women have always played a major role in determining their country's future. The big question: What made them do a 180?
