Ponder this: A CNN interview with Newt
Okay, Bro, I've pondered--
I listened to the entire thing. This despite the fact that I can't stand to look at Newt Gingrich or hear the sound of his voice.
On many fronts, I think he's right. Iraq was a total diversion from fighting the war on terror. Of course Newt's former colleagues in the Congress gave Bush the green light to invade Iraq, knowing full well that Hussein had nothing to do with 9-11, the biggest attack ever on American soil.
Their little adventure there has caused nothing but chaos in a country that was ruled by a vicious strongman, but one who knew that only a vicious strongman can control all of the warring tribes and Moslem factions who reside there. Our government managed to f--k it up big-time, and as a result, Iraq is now lousy with Al Qaida operatives (or at least franchisees who use the name Al Qaida because they know it strikes fear in the hearts of Westerners).
So pardon me if I'm a bit skeptical about Ahmadinejad and his nuclear designs on Tel Aviv. He might fanticise about it in his dreams at night, but 1) he's at least five years away from trying and 2) if he did try it, Iran would be vaporized. Even he's not that crazy: there aren't enough virgins in Paradise to go around for all the dead Moslems that would create.
That doesn't mean I'm not scared out of my wits. Of course I am, but not of Ahmadinejad and his fellow Iranians. I'm not worried about Newt's grandchildren losing wars against those awful Moslems. I'm much more worried about the millions of Americans who are losing their paychecks, their pensions, their health care and worse of all, their civil liberties.
It's likely that Newt's grandchildren will inherit the oligarchy being created in this country, but yours probably won't. You've managed to maintain a comfortable position in an ever-shrinking middle class (for which I am eternally grateful), but unless you're in a position to leave your children a fortune, they could face an ever greater struggle just to stay alive.
Did you know that people who have health insurance are twice as likely to survive cancer for five years as people without (heard that stat on the radio this morning)? As American jobs wind up in China, more and more Americans are without employer-paid healthcare, and can't afford to buy it themselves on the meager wages they're pulling down in the service sector. That amounts to millions of Americans who have an ever-shrinking chance of surviving a catastrophic disease. Newt's afraid of losing an American city, yet the number of people who will die because of lack of health-care is far greater than the population of just about any city in America. Unfortunatley, the Newts in this country aren't worried about them.
But if you're still more scared of the Moslem bogeyman, consider this: Halliburton, which holds contracts either directly or indirectly, wholly or in consortia, in nearly every sector of our strategic preparedness (including the labs up here), has packed up and moved its headquarters to Dubai. Last I checked, that's a Moslem country with intimate ties to the Saudis, the folks who really DID bring us 9-11. When the Bush Administration got caught trying to turn our ports over to the Bahrainis, they "backed off" by giving the contracts to a British front organization. In effect, the Bahrainis, also Moslems with intimate Saudi ties, now control our ports.
Now c'mon, Bro. You're a very clever guy. Why aren't you putting 2+2 together? Sisty
